Chief of staff Peta Credlin has been criticised over perceptions that she has too much control over Tony Abbott. Well, Tony demonstrated quite emphatically that this is not the case when he made his completely idiotic statement about the importance of the repeal of the Carbon Tax for Australian women.
It is almost impossible to understand how the man could have said something like this. Not only did he insult 50% of the electorate, but also makes himself look like an idiot with this completely nonsensical statement. Was Credlin having the day off?
I’m reminded of the line from the Hilaire Belloc poem “Jim who ran away from his nurse and was eaten by a lion.”
and on this inauspicious day
he slipped his hand and ran away
he hadn’t gone yard when bang
with open jaws a lion sprang
and hungrily began to eat
the boy beginning at his feet
Obviously, Tony ran away from Nurse Credlin. Jim was eaten by the lion, Tony’s death will be much slower and probably more painful to watch.
But he finished 2014 with all guns blazing, an reclaimed chauvinist making what was probably his biggest faux pas for many years. Julie Bishop had a shot at covering for the boss. She should stop trying. Defending such behaviour looks like an error of judgement.
My prediction for 2014 was that Abbott would crack under the strain and take leave to spend more time with his family.
The cracks are certainly beginning to appear.
