When no one at home agrees with you, it’s probably time for a rethink.

While the Irish victory for same-sex marriage advocates would keep the pressure on the issue, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has ruled out a similar referendum in Australia.

Mr Abbott acknowledged the issue was important to millions of Australians, but said his immediate priority was boosting small business confidence through measures announced in the budget.

So small business confidence and gay marriage are mutually exclusive. Tony Abbott demonstrates he is incapable of thinking of more than  one policy issue at a time. Perhaps that’s his problem. He can’t consider issues such as asylum seeker policy and climate change policy at the same time, so he just ignores them.

Lyndon Johnson once famously said of Gerald Ford  ” (He) is so dumb he can’t fart and chew gum at the same time.” Now, it would probably be a bit cruel to say that of Tony Abbott but surely we can expect the Prime Minister to have more than one policy item on the go at a time.

But then he did say “Inside the Abbott  family, I’m the only holdout for the traditional position.”

When you go home at night and no one around the dinner table agrees with the position you take on an important social justice issue, it’s probably time to take a good hard look at yourself.

But not our Tony ,whose response to any request that he think about an issue is “Nope, nope, nope.”

Doesn’t that take the three-word slogan to new heights?
