Tony Abbott was always treating the electorate as a gang of mugs

There will be lots written about the reasons why Tony Abbott lost the leadership of the Liberal party.

This picture, taken as Tony Abbott walked towards the party room for the decisive vote against Malcolm Turnbull, shows one of the reasons.

Abbott is marching towards the showdown flanked by two women, one of whom is Karen McNamara, the member for Dobell.

Abbott is trying to give the impression that women support him. Indeed, pictures of him during question time always had McNamara and the number of other women in the background. This was designed to give the impression that the Liberal party backbench was full of women. Which it wasn’t.

Everybody knows that the Liberal party is short on women but this picture is designed to give the opposite impression. It fools nobody but the sad thing was that Tony Abbott clearly thought it did.

Karen McNamara is nowhere to be seen. It’ll be interesting to see the seating arrangements in Malcolm Turnbull’s new government.
