Malcolm Turnbull has been completely outmanoeuvred by Tony Abbott and the right wing of this party over this issue. The plebiscite has achieved almost everything thatThe right of the Liberal Party intended it to do. It hasn’t actually killed the idea off but it looks as if it will be delayed for the foreseeable future.
Unless Malcolm Turnbull decides to allow a free vote in the House of Parliament.
This still remains an option to allow the legislation to go forward. Many would say it’s the best and certainly the least expensive option.
But this will mean facing down Tony Abbott and the right wing of his party. If he wants to rescue his now-faltering prime ministership, he will need to demonstrate to the Australian electorate that he is not in thrall to this small group of out-of-touch conservatives.
Malcolm Turnbull gives an estimation of his likely time as Prime Minister
One of the profound ironies of Australian politics is that the Prime Minister curries favour with a group of people whose only aim is to get rid of him. Eventually, he is going to have to confront and defeat them if he wishes to remain as Prime Minister.
The longer he leaves it, the more difficult it will be.
