The wheels of justice turn slow but grind exceeding fine

Pity poor Rocco Arico already convicted on seven counts over an extortion and drug trafficking scheme who appeared in the County Court on Wednesday to hear arguments for mitigation.

He appeared before Judge Geoffrey Chettle, notoriously (and publicly) intolerant of bullshit.

Arico has previous convictions for kidnapping in 1999 and attempted murder in 2000 after shooting a man six times, for which he spent more than seven years in prison.

The good judge said: “But since being out of jail he hasn’t become the model citizen you (his defence lawyer) would have me believe he is.”

Judge Chettle added “The mitigatory factors are few. You’ve got no remorse, you’ve got nothing.”

Rico, who has lived in Australia all this life but never became an Australian citizen, faces a lengthy jail term and then deportation to Italy.
